Abstract
TV dramas make a genre of dramatic art in which actors display a variety of human lives with their words and acts according to the script. Just like common dramas, TV dramas need more than just actors and their acting skills to deliver the dramatic movement to the viewers in the optimal condition. The utmost artistic effects of acting can be obtained when various constituents of a drama, which include the stage, accidents, characters and backgrounds, strike harmony with one another and actors are briskly assisted by the set, costume, and makeup. Historical dramas boast many different advantages; they meet the viewers` desperate need for catharsis for the past dormant inside them and the world of dreams beyond time and space limitations; they use a rather soft approach towards history unlike textbooks, delivering gentle dramatic movement to the viewers; and accordingly they make a huge contribution to history education, inheritance of traditional culture, and promotion of the people`s spirit. One of the ways to express a character in a second is to show the impression image of the character. The biggest influencer on an impression image is the face. There is no doubt that impression images have crucial impacts on makeup as an effective way to express a character. In this study, a survey was taken to investigate how much consensus was felt by the viewers between the character image intended by the writer and the image expressed by makeup and to measure actors` satisfaction with makeup. If an impression image was selected just based on a picture with no explanations about the part or character and if the character intended by the writer and the character expressed by makeup were felt similar to the impression image felt by the viewers, there would be consensus, which could result in a higher level of satisfaction with makeup and further with the drama. The analysis results indicate that the viewer were more absorbed into the characters as the characters` images were delivered to them as intended by the writer and that the actors seemed to be satisfied with makeup, which played a role in the higher ratings. With the arrival of quickly evolving digital TV and high-definition TV screens, character makeup for TV dramas must go through many changes and growths. In an effort to prepare for the potential issues, they need to provide systematic and professional education to bring up various professionals by diversifying mustache and beard materials and makeup materials used for character makeup in historical dramas, improving the makeup techniques.
