A Study of Nail Art Applying Optical Illusion Effect

Abstract
In modern society that regards extraordinary individuality and self-expression as important, nail art acts as very effective expression means to show unique individuality, as well as a good behavior enough to meet a desire for beauty. In line with this trend of modern society, this study is intended to create novel and sensuous nail art by using illusion which is one characteristic of optical art as motive to suggest nail art design more elegantly and originally. In order to achieve this purpose, this study applied visual effect of illusion out of several formative elements found in optical art as a theoretical background and examined optical illusion human beings feel. Then illusion effect of optical art was analyzed by element and applied it to nail art products. As a result, the following analysis results are summarized. First, illusion motive of optical art could visually highlight particular parts and create unique design with volume. Moreover, the illusion effect could be applied to plane nail art. Second, illusion which reacts immediately through our eyes extended its expression area to systematic, scientific, and rational design. It will contribute to meeting consumer`s aesthetic desire by pursuing a variety of changes of nail art. Third, visual formative elements of optical patterns are consistent with modern sense and establish them as a high dimensional design element which can represent the aesthetic desire and individuality of human beings. In many formative elements found in optical art, form, color, and volume were classified and examined by picture type. As a result, the ornamental element which has geometric image and modern feeling of nail art could be provided. Finally, by maximizing perspective and space depth through the contrast of color, strong impression and concentration was aroused and characteristics of various optical patterns could be highlighted. In conclusion, this study illuminated new possibility and various visual of nail art by applying illusion which is representative of optical art. Further study will focus on the creation of nail art design applying various optical illusion effects to contribute to the development of nail art that meets the flow of times.
