Abstract
In this work, the application of keratinase produced from Bacillus sp. KN-517 to the hair softening or to the cleaning of hair surface was studied. When the hair was treated with keratinase at 25(o)C (group 1) or 50(o)C (group 2) for 30 min. the hair thickness was decreased by 2.4% and 4.9%, respectively, while the treatment time was increased up to 24hr., the hair thickness was decreased by 14.8% and 34%, respectively. For 30 min treatment, the tensile strength of hair was decreased by about 7.4% for both groups, while 24 hr treatment made the tensile strength to be decreased by 18 and 36%, respectively. The hair surface damage due to the keratinase treatment was determined using methylene blue dye staining method and it was found that the hair damage was increased 18% and 36% for group1 or for group 2, respectively. According to the electronic scanning microscopy observation, some dirt materials were still found on the hair surface for group 1, but the dir materials were all gone for group 2 with 30 min. treatment, The enzyme treatment was also found to give an effect of arrangement of cuticle layer by softening of hair structure, but the inner matrix of hair shaft was not seriously damaged. From theseresults, we could conclude that the keratinase treatment of hair for 30 min. seemed to be a very efficientmethod to eliminate the dirt materials from the hair surface and at the same time, to soften the hair structure to realize the hair styling easily.
