Research Paper : Thermal Properties Change of Dark Brown and Blonde Hair
Eun Jeong Choi, Sang Mo Kang
Abstract
This study compared dark brown hair (DBH) and blonde hair (BH) by analyzing their thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), electrondispersion spectroscopy (EDS), and FE-SEM to examine how DBH and BH are damaged by the temperature of treatment and explore the method of improvement. The following are the major findings of the analysis in this study: In the comparative analysis of the change in the thermal properties of DBH and BH, the weight of hair decreased less for BH at 200oC, but BH showed a greater decrease in weight from 400oC as BH undergoes more severe thermal decomposition. Also, in the EDS analysis of the elements that compose the hair strands, DBH had greater carbon (C) and sulfur (S) contents than BH did. Also, carbon (C) and calcium (Ca) increased for both DBH and BH when combusted to 500oC, but their oxygen (O), sulfur (S), and nitrogen (N) contents decreased. In the FE-SEM observation, BH combusted to 500oC was more damaged than DBH did.
Key Words: Dark brown, Blonde, Hair, Temperature, Damage
