Research Paper : A Comparison of Traditional Make-up Techniques of Tang Dynasty with Make-up Expressions Reproduced in Mass Media

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the needs for review of the traditional make-up techniques in Tang dynasty and to analyze the make-up reproduced in the film media. Pictures related to the Chinese history containing literature and photos on the Internet and art books used for reviews and analysis. The traditional make-up techniques and characteristics found in 5 films after consultation with 3 make-up experts in this field. Then, a comparison and analysis was conducted with the traditional make-up techniques and characteristics found in the films and the old relics and paintings. As a result, traditional make-up techniques were practiced in more exotic, colorful and liberal manner than before. Continuously in great vogue were Hongjang, Hongbun and Hwajeun using several pigments, eyebrows of various shapes and small but thick painting in lip. Myeonyop was also widely liked by imprinting dimples of pearl-size at both sides of one`s lip. The movie featured reproduction of Hongjang, Hwajeun and eyebrow make-up. In the movie , eyebrow make-up appeared in a gorgeous modern mode quite different from the traditional makeup technique. In , Hwajeun, Swahong and eyebrow make-up were reproduced but lip make-up was expressed in a totally different way. In conclusion, it seems necessary to apply the traditional make-up techniques to the given situation after closely studying and properly modifying them in order to present the image of the circumstances and characters in reflection of the times in the movies or dramas.
