Abstract
This study was to analyze the effects of seed extract of Schizandra chinensis on the skin anti-oxidant and anti-aging, and evaluate whether seed extract of Schizandra chinensis can be developed as an anti-oxidizing or anti-aging agent for improving the skin condition. Seed extract was prepared by using water or ethanol as a solvent and was used for analyzing the contents of polyphenol, electron donating activity, reducing power and SOD(superoxide dismutase)-like activity. The total contents of polyphenol was higher in the seed extract by ethanol than the extract by water. Seed extract by ethanol contained higher electron donating activity compared to the extract with water. Electron donating activity was increased proportionally and significantly as the concentration of the tested extract was increased (p<0.05). The reducing power and the superoxide dismutase(SOD)-like activity of seed extract was significantly increased as increasing concentrations of the extract were analyzed (p<0.05). Dry seed extract in the group of water extracts has the highest activity for both reducing power and SOD-like activity, while dry seed extract and fermented seed extract showed higher activities compared to roasted seed extract in the group of ethanol extracts. Taken together, it was found that seed extract of Schizandra chinensis contain the anti-oxidizing activities and seems to be effective for skin care as an anti-oxidant. The Schizandra chinensis seed is a by-product obtained after consuming the fruit flesh of Schizandra chinensis and might be usefully applied to improve the skin conditions as an antioxidant functional cosmetics for whitening, preventing wrinkles, or removing skin troubles, such as pimples.
